Laboratory Diagnosis of Anemia based on Morphological classification

Abstract
Anemia can be classified according to a deficient number of circulating red blood cells -or a deficient hemoglobin concentration, or both.
A classification of anemia on the basis rbc morphology, as seen in the peripheral blood smear and supported by the quantitative measurements of cell size (MCV) and-Hb. content and concentration (l1CH and MCHC), can provide a valuable indicationas to the possible etiological mechanisms.
According to William R. Platt, values found in anemia are 3.9 million/mm¢¥ in men, rbc 3.2 million/mm3 in women, or Hb. conc. below 10.8gm/dl in men, Hb. conc. below 9.2gm/dl in women.
We divided the anemia into 5 groups and made investigations to classify the causes -of pure nutritional anemia and their epidemiological relations to morphological classification and nutritional problems on 465 patients from 1 month to 78 years in this hospital for 1 year during Feb. 1. 1975-Jan. 31. 1976.
The obtained results are summarized as follows:
1. Anemia was most common under 10 years 132 (28.36%) repectively.
2. Major type of anemia by rbc morphology and index were normocytic normochromic 246(5296), macrocytic 84(18/6), microcyiic 48(105yo), microcytic hypochromic 68(145vo), normocytic hypochromic 19(4%). "
3. Morphological classification of these anemias were generally high normocytic normochromic type 30(60.00%) in Septenber, macrocytic 14(29.78%) in November, microcytic 8 (19.65%) in D.-c., microcytic hypochromic 13(31.70%) in Dcember, normocytic hypochromic 3(6.126.66%) in July and October.
4. Anemia was generally high-risk under 10 years and low 11-20 and 41-50 years of age group. In adult age group, especially 31-40 years women were more high percentiles than men in comparison with each other 73961. It seems likely to be caused by her pregnancy and childbirth.
5. In most developing countries, there are urgent necessities of proper guidance for medical care and nutrition in these age groups for future life of the nation.
